Through a series of guided meetings and retreats, the Self Circle focuses teachers on maintaining personal strength and stability in challenging situations. The Courage to Teach® program offered by the Center for Courage & Renewal is the foundation of this Circle. The Center was founded 25 years ago by Parker J. Palmer, author of the best-selling book, The Courage to Teach.
The Courage to Teach® programs help teachers renew heart, mind, and spirit through the exploration of the inner landscape of a teacher’s life and enables them to reconnect to their identity, honor their gifts and strengths and acknowledge their limits. Teachers who gather in safe spaces with trusted colleagues make use of personal stories, reflections on classroom practice, and insights from poets, storytellers, and various wisdom traditions to facilitate this personal reflection. This work honors diversity in the person and the profession and helps teachers create safe spaces and trusting relationships in their schools, with their students and colleagues, and within their communities.
“This [program] builds on a simple premise: good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.” —Parker J. Palmer, The Courage to Teach
